Storing Coffee
Coffee freshness is one of the core values of specialty coffee.
There are several contributing factors that give rise to rapid coffee aging. Such factors are unfortunately beyond our control, but if we use proper storage methods then the aging process can be slowed significantly.
The main culprits of rapid coffee aging include:
Oxygen
Moisture
Light
Heat
Time
The ideal way to store coffee beans is to put them in an opaque container or package with minimum exposure to heat and light. If you do plan to use an opaque jar, make sure that it is airtight so that no oxygen or moisture gets trapped inside. Keep in mind that although these tips and tricks will help slow down the aging process, coffee freshness does not last a lifetime. Due to a chemical process known as degassing, coffee has a shelf life of approximately 3 months from the roasting date. Next time you’re out buying coffee, make sure you check the roast date to ensure freshness, consistency, and quality.
